'He doesn't chew or anything, he just... holds it'

So I get home from work, and my golden does the usual goes absolutely nuts, wiggly butt and the whole nine yards. But then he does this specific thing that just kills me every time.

He'll gently boop and sniff my hand, then ever so softly take it in his mouth. He doesn't chew or anything, he just... holds it. Then he starts slowly leading me to the living room like he's guiding me.
  • 05
Once we get there, he plops down, rolls over, and exposes his belly for the other hand to get to work. It's like his way of saying, "You pet me with this hand, and I'll just hold this one. Welcome home."

It totally melts my heart. I'm just curious, is this a common golden retriever thing? Does your pup do a version of the "gentle hand hold" too?

numelsee My 6yo Goldie will paw and you have to hold it.... Until she goes to sleep. If you don't hold it then you get the "I'm not angry, just disappointed" look.

grraveyard Yes! But mine does it when we go out to the yard and if I'm not matching his speed he'll grab my hand and drag me to the yard faster haven't been able to catch it on film yet

GrumpyGiant Mine has her own ritual. Every morning she refuses to hop off the bed and leave my room until I've given her a belly rub. I'll get up, open the door to my room, and call her to go downstairs for breakfast.
  • 11
She'll stand up, walk to the edge of the bed, then flop down and roll over. "Excuse me sir, but you seem to have forgotten something. A tummy tax is owed and has not been paid. I will not be going downstairs until this dire situation has been rectified."

I give her the tummy rub and then she gets up and hops down. Usually. Sometimes she decides she needs a second tummy rub and flops down and rolls over again. What am I gonna do? That tummy tax is the most important part of my morning and will be paid as many times as necessary to ensure a proper start to the day.

MrBorden The raptor stages never really leave a Golden. It just softens.

Tourist Opentotravel My golden puts his paw on your leg when he's demanding attention
  • 15
McMarmot1 Mine does. When I get home he wags his tail rapidly, kind of prances around, whines a little, and grabs my hand. It's a *little* firm for my liking but it's sweet.

MrsTrellis4464 My golden insists I hold a paw (front or back) almost constantly.

taksee We call this "whole mouth" aka when she shoves a part of your body into her whole mouth

CrookedBut Beauti... My boy LOVES to hold hands, but with his paw. He will sit beside me and go to give me a paw, cause he wants to "hold hands".
